Xen® Hypervisor
What is the Xen® Hypervisor?
Xen is an open-source type-1 or baremetal hypervisor, which makes it possible
to run many instances of an operating system or indeed different operating systems in parallel on a single machine (or host). Xen is
the only type-1 hypervisor that is available as open source. Xen is used as the basis for a number of different commercial and open
source applications, such as: server virtualization, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), desktop virtualization, security
applications, embedded and hardware appliances. Xen enables users to increase server utilization, consolidate server farms, reduce
complexity, and decrease total cost of ownership. — Learn More About Xen
Xen Eco-system
The Xen Hypervisor has a user base in the millions, that include cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services,
Rackspace Hosting, Linode and many others. Some of our users have volunteered
case studies showing how they use Xen.

projects, services and research related to Xen.
Xen is developed by a world-wide community of individuals, researchers and employees of companies and that follow a
governance process based on openness, transparency and meritocracy. You can
find a recent contribution breakdown in the Xen 4.2 Acknowledgments.
License
The Xen® Hypervisor is licensed under the
GNU General Public License (GPL2). For more
information check the Xen.org legal page.
Getting Xen
The Xen hypervisor is available as source distribution from Xen.org. However,
you can get recent Xen binaries as packages from most Linux
and Unix distributions, both open source and commercial. Some Linux distributions deliver Xen as a
LiveCD, that you can use to easily test Xen. The Xen hypervisor is also the foundation
of the Xen Cloud Platform, which adds further functionality to the hypervisor and many integrations
for third party cloud, storage and networking solutions.
